On rare occasions, after receiving a vaccine, people may experience what is called a “Shoulder Injury Related to Vaccine Administration,” also known as SIRVA.
When experiencing SIRVA, common symptoms include intense shoulder pain and decreased range of motion. This condition can be difficult to deal with for the patient. It not only causes shoulder pain, but it also makes it hard to do day-to-day tasks.
Anyone who believes they are or is currently suffering from SIRVA should seek medical treatment from their healthcare providers. You should not attempt any exercises without first consulting with your doctor, especially if you’re experiencing intense shoulder pain and reduced range of motion.
With that in mind, here are 5 exercises that a physical therapist or doctor may recommend.
If you or a loved one has recently been diagnosed with SIRVA and looking to receive help, our team of vaccine injury attorneys is here for you. 5 SIRVA Treatment Exercises You Should Know
The following exercises may help relieve Frozen Shoulder Syndrome and increase your range of motion in your affected shoulder. After learning how to do these exercises properly from a licensed physical therapist, you may be able to do them at home.
1. Cross Body Reach
You can do this either sitting or standing. Using your good arm, gently grab your injured arm at the elbow and raise it across your body around the chest area. Slightly apply pressure to stretch the shoulder, and hold this position for about 15 to 20 seconds. Do this around 10 to 20 times a day.
2. Pendulum Stretch
Keeping your shoulders relaxed, slightly bend over so that your injured arm is hanging down. Now, start to swing your arm in a clockwise motion doing 10 small rotations. Then repeat, going counterclockwise. Do this once per day, and as your condition improves you can make the rotations bigger.
3. Armpit Stretch
Using your good arm, raise and place the injured arm on an elevated surface (such as a table or shelf) that is about level with your upper chest. Once ready, start to bend your knees and stretch the area in your armpit. Each time you bend the knees go down a little bit more, but don’t strain yourself. Do this 10 to 20 times a day.
4. Finger Walk
Place yourself about three quarters of an arm’s length away from a wall. Taking your pointer and middle finger, place them on the wall in front of you and start to slowly “walk” them up the wall until you reach as far as you can go. Make sure that your fingers are the ones doing the work and not your arm muscles, this is key. Once at the top, slowly lower your arm and repeat the steps above.
5. Towel Stretch
Grab a bath towel and with both hands holding separate ends of the towel, place it behind your back horizontally. Using your non injured arm, pull the hurt arm up to stretch it.
